n. I n enkele tientallen mensen zonder Dakota, medio 1982 is de
Enige
tijd later viel de technische dienst we
derom een dergelijk compliment te
beurt, toen de PH-DDA op een vliegs-
how het best onderhouden historische
vliegtuig was. Ook de Jordaanse ko
ning Hussein, die toevallig op Fairford
op bezoek was en de PH-DDA van
binnen en buiten inspecteerde, liet zijn
waardering niet onder stoelen of
banken.
Ludieke bemanning
kermotor kapot gegaan. Tóen bleek
wat een geweldige organisatie de DDA
is. 's Nachts werd door de technici
keihard doorgewerkt om de die avond
per vliegtuig gebrachte nieuwe zuiger
te kunnen installeren. En de PH-DDA
vloog die dag weer, begeleid door het
applaus van de aanwezigen.
De meest recente lange afstands deel-
nemersvlucht vond plaats in augustus
1986, toen de PH-DDA een weekend
naar het Zweedse Bromma bij Stock
holm ging op uitnodiging van onze
vrienden van de Flygande Veteraner.
Ook Dakota's uit Zweden, Noorwegen
en Finland waren daarbij present.
Hoogtepunt was daar niet alleen een
spectaculaire massaformatie, maar te
vens een echte Hollandse klompen
dans, die bij de Zweden grote indruk
maakte.
Vriendschap, waardering,
vertrouwen

ten aangeknoopt. Mensen, die uit alle
lagen van de bevolking komen, uit alle
beroepssoorten of (helaas) zonder
werk.
haast vanzelfsprekend is. Zonder on
derling vertrouwen werkt een organisa
tie van DDA-formaat niet, en wie dit
artikel nog eens overleest weet dat de
DDA-organisatie een modelorganisatie
in de (historische) luchtvaart is. Wij
vertrouwen erop dat dit nog jarenlang
zo zal blijven.
In the five years of its existence the Dutch Da
kota Association has gained the reputation of an
organisation which accents safety, craftsmanship
and perseverence in relation to its activities. Sin
ce the start of the DDA in 1982 with a few do
zen members and no Dakota at all, the associa
tion grew in five years to a professional organi
sation of approximately two thousand people (of
whom one hundred and fifty are active in the
DDA) with no less than two Dakotas and a
DC-2 ,,Uiver" (Stork), which the historians had
assumed to be lost for decades Just because
the DDA is such a smooth running organisation,
people easily tend to forget that five years is on
ly a small period and how many events already

Bij een evenement van

hoort een competitie. En
bij een competitie horen
prijzen. Iedere zichzelf
respecterende organisator
van een dergelijk evene
ment houdt zich aan deze
regels. Zo ook de organi
satoren van het grote
feest van historische
vliegtuigen op Texel. De
vliegers, die op Texel te
gast zijn, azen op een
viertal prijzen. Allereerst
is er de DDA Distance
Award. Die wordt toege
kend aan het vliegtuig,
dat de langste afstand
heeft afgelegd om naar
deze Texel-DDA Fly-ln te
komen. Vervolgens is er
een nieuwe prijs: de Ome
Ben Award. Deze prijs
werd genoemd naar Ben
van der Schinkel (in de
omgang „Ome Ben" ge
naamd). Hij is één van de
Dakota-technici van het
eerste uur, niet alleen bij
de DDA maar ook bij
Martinair, die bij nacht en
ontij voor de DDA-
vliegtuigen in de weer is
en een onmisbaar per
soon in de organisatie is
geworden. De Ome Ben
Award wordt toegekend
aan die persoon of orga
nisatie, die zich op bijzon
dere wijze verdienstelijk
heeft gemaakt op tech
nisch gebied in de histori
sche luchtvaart.
Dan is er de DDA Trophy.
Die gaat naar de winnaar
van de Concours d'Elé-
gance van de Texel-DDA
Fly-ln. Deze prijs is voor
het mooiste aanwezige
historische vliegtuig en
ieder type komt daarvoor
in aanmerking, mits oud
genoeg.
Tenslotte is er de grote
McDonnell Douglas Tro
phy voor de winnaar van
de Concours d'Elégance
voor Dakota's. Dit is een
door de McDonnell Doug
las vliegtuigfabrieken ter
beschikking gestelde
wisselprijs.
Wat moet worden ver
staan onder een ..histo
risch" vliegtuig? Een
historisch vliegtuigtype
moet minstens dertig jaar
geleden de eerste vlucht
hebben gemaakt. Zou een
vliegtuig van een type dat
minstens dertig jaar gele
den voor het eerst vloog,
vijfentwintig jaar oud zijn,
dan komt het nog in aan
merking voor één van de
prijzen. Is het echter
„pas" drie- of vierentwin
tig jaar oud, dan vallen ze
buiten mededinging.
De DDA Distance Award,
de Ome Ben Award, de
DDA Trophy en de
McDonnell Douglas Tro

When a meeting of historical air
craft takes place, there should be a
competition. And when there is a
competition, there are award^ to be
given Every self respecting organi
zer of such an event sticks to these
rules, the organizers of the Texel-
DDA Fly-ln as well. The aviatiors
present at Texel will be competing
for four awards. First of all, there is
the DDA Distance Award, for the
aircraft that flew the longest distan
ce to get to the Fly-ln
Secondly there is a new award The
Ome Ben Award. This award has
been called after Ben van der
Schinkel (for DDA-members ,,Ome
Ben", Dutch for Uncle Ben). He is
one of the DDAs senior Dakota
technicians and before that he was
one of the veteran Dakota technici
ans with Martinair. He is always ac
tive for the DDA-aircraft, day and
night and he is an essential person
in the organisation The Ome Ben
Award will go to a person or orga
nisation, who or which has distin
guished him - or itself on the tech
nical level in historical aviation.
Then there is the DDA Trophy for
the winner of the Concours d'Elé
gance of the Texel-DDA Fly-ln. This
is an award for the most beautiful
historical aircraft present, no matter
what type. The only condition is
that it should be old enough Final
ly there is the McDonnell Douglas
Trophy for the winner of the Con
cours d'Elégance for Dakotas This
award is offered by McDonnell
Douglas corporation, Long Beach,
USA and is an exchange award
Before we announce who will pre
sent these awards, we would like to
explain what we mean by historical
aircraft. A historical type of aircraft
should have made its first flight at
least thirty years ago. Should an
aircraft of a type that first flew thir
ty years ago be twenty-five years
old, than it also will be considered
for an award. However, is it only
twenty-three or twenty-four years
old, than it cannot compete with
the real old aircraft.
As far as we know at this moment
the DDA Distance Award, the Ome
Ben Award, the DDA Trophy and
the McDonnell Douglas Trophy will
be presented on the 16th May by
no other than HRH Prince Bernhard
of the Netherlands.
have taken place We would like to grve you an
example of these activities
After the still very small DDA had presented it
self at the airshow of the Royal Dutch Organisa
tion of Aviation (KNVvL) at Lelystad with only a
few posters and stickers, in the fall of 1982 the
first of the yearly D-Days (Dakota-Days) took
place The DDA had by then grown into an or
ganisation of some five hundred members, and
several hundreds of them plus guests were pre
sent to take knowledge of the ambitious plans
of the board Also the beginning was made with
setting up the organisation structure as it is to
day, and last but not least meeting the fellow
members of the DDA This first big event took
place at the club of the Royal Air Force Associa
tion (RAFA).
Sponsor found as well
as Dakota
In order to be able to buy a Dakota and, no less
important, maintain and fly it, funds were nee
ded. Some persons lent without any profitable
conditions large sums to the DDA. The compu-
tercompany Hewlett Packard opened the way to
the purchase of a Dakota by signing an agree
ment, initially for one year (1984) and then for
three more years to support the DDA financially.
On 10th August chairman Anne Cor Groeneveld
sent a message from Helsinki (Finland) that the
DDA had purchased from the Finnish Air Force
their DC-3 DO-7 alias PH-DDA. In a period of
one and a half year about one thousand people
had managed with much effort and few finances
to get an airworthy Dakota to the Netherlands.
After a major overhaul at Helsinki by Karair and
Finnair, on the 17th and 18th April 1984 the PH-
DDA was ferried to Schiphol Amsterdam, wel
comed near Amsterdam by the Fokker Four
team and a Harvard And we should not forget
the waiting members, the newspapers reporters
and the eight o' clock television news
Dutch CAA recognize
technical department
In the beginning of Juni 1984 the first flights for
members took place: the First of all was a return
flight from Amsterdam to Texel on the 2nd Ju
ne. A landing at Texel was executed and the
members drank a cup of coffee before flying
back again. Dozens of trips for members in the
Netherlands and abroad would follow. Soon the
Minister of Transport Mrs. N. Smit-Kroes took
the opportunity to congratulate the DDA with
its succes and grant the DDA the permission to
fly with the Dakota Finally in the fall of 1984
the Dutch Civil Aviation Authorities fully recog
nized the DDA Technical Department, so the
Dakota could be maintained by the DDA itself
Highlights here and abroad
1985 was a year of festivity Again, you might
say. Fifty years earlier the first of thirteenthou-
sand DC-3s took off for the first time. The be
ginning of a new era: the era of modern avia
tion. In July the DDA celebrated it by means of
a breathtaking airshow at Eindhoven Airport.
Many guests were present The highlight at this
celebration was a formation by six Dakotas from
the Netherlands, England, Sweden, the USA
and Eire, which passed the scene three times.
This huge party was also the reason to present
a new kind of beer by Bavaria: the DDA Dako-
tap-ls. Also a book was presented that covered
the history of each and every Dutch Dakota,
and finally the DDA audiovisual team presented
a video with three year of DDA history. A few
days later at Fairford, England, the International
Air Tattoo took place One of the centres of in
terest was the golden Dakota Some Dakotas
flew in formation from the Netherlands to Eng
land There the Technical Department was con
gratulated when, after a thorough examination
by experts, the PH-DDA turned out to be Euro
pe's most beautiful Dakota Some time later the
Technical Department was once again praised at
a meeting of historical aircraft because the PH-
DDA was the best maintained aircraft present
The Jordan King Hussein, who visited the PH-
DDA while being at Fairford, showed his appre
ciation for the PH-DDA
Funny crew
The oddest price was given to the crew of PH-
DDA at the Swiss town of Bex, where the DDA
got a price for the funiest crew. During the
breathtaking demonstration, which was perfor
med by PH-DDA, some Dutch broadcasting or
ganisations made spectacular videos.
As the Dakota also sometimes is called the
workhorse of the air, it is not very suprising that
the DDA adopted a foal from the ..Dakota" sta
ble. The foal, which is called Dutch Dakota, is a
cute little horse. On 10th May 1987, during spe
cial DC-3 horse races at Duindigt (near The Ha
gue), it met the racing world, while PH-DDA
and PH-DDZ (which just arrived from Malta) we
re lumbering overhead
Long distance flights
An example of perseverence, that drew respect
from collegue aviation lovers, happened at Col
mar at the French Vosges Just before landing,
a piston of the left engine broke down At that
very moment the reliability of the DDA was evi
dent. At night the engineers worked very hard
in order to be able to install a new cylinder,
which was brought by DDA members by air
craft. And the next day the PH-DDA flew again,
during which performance it was accompanied
by the applause of the audience.
The most recent long distance flight for mem
bers took place in August 1986, when the PH-
DDA visited the Swedish airport Bromma near
Stockholm, following an invitation by our
friends of the Flygande Veteraner Dakotas from
Sweden, Norway and Finland were present as
well. Highlight was not only a spectacular mass
formation, but also a real Dutch dance on woo
den shoes, which impressed the Swedish fel
lows very much.
Friendship, appreciation,
trust
Safety, craftsmanship and perseverence are
things one cannot miss in aviation. Without the
se ideas aviation never would have become
what it is today But for the DDA it is not all.
Because there is more needed than that in order
to keep an organisation of pure volunteers run
ning. In the case of the DDA these uncountable
hours of work, that are done without any finan
cial reward, are awarded with three things that
emphasise the human factor in the DDA
Friendship: During those five years people met
and made contacts People from all walks of life,
from all sorts of profession of (unfortunately) on
the dole But in an organisation like the DDA
such classes do not existl
Appreciation: In practice the DDA appears to
stimulate the creativity of people strongly. Many
of the active members are performing work wi
thin the DDA, which they could make their pro
fession (by way of speaking), and of which they
never could have dreamed they could do the
jobs they are actually doing now The appreciati
on is shown by the fact that the good and hard
work of these people in the DDA as far as safe
ty and quality is concerned had gained fame all
over the world.
Trust in each other: an absolute necessity in
aviation, which is virtually normal in the DDA.
Without trust in each other an organisation like
the DDA could not work properly, and if you
would re-read this article, you know that the
DDA-orgamsation is a model organisation in
(historical) aviation. We trust that this will keep
for many years to come
